The 4th meeting of the Standing Committees of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) was inaugurated this morning at the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal in Lisbon. The 1st Standing Committee is chaired by the Hon. José Junqueiro, PAM Vice President as well as the Head of the Portuguese delegation and Rapporteur on Disaster Management.

40 Parliamentarians representing the states from the Mediterranean will debate the draft reports and resolutions that the Rapporteurs will present for endorsement by the respective standing orders. These reports and resolutions are the result of the workings of the Special Task Forces and Ad Hoc Committees that met earlier this year in Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt and Italy. The discussions will focus today on the issues of organized crime, terrorism, and the Middle East.

Today the Parliamentarians within the 1st Standing Committee will also be addressed by Mr. Filippo Grandi, Deputy Commissioner of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), who will deliver a keynote speech on the experiences of the agency regarding its role and work with Palestinian refugees.

Mr. Grandi will be followed by Hon. George Vellas (Malta) presentation of the report on the PAM Middle East mission, which took place in May, in his capacity as Chair of the respective Ad Hoc Committee.
