New York (USA), 16th May 2022 – The President of the UN General Assembly hosted informal consultations with stakeholders on the day preceding the start of the UN International Migration Review Forum, a global platform to discuss progress on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and its relation with Agenda 2030.
On the occasion, PAM was represented by Amb. Qazi Shaukat Fareed, Permanent Observer for PAM at the United Nations, during a panel themed “Assessing the progress, gaps, and challenges in the implementation of the Global Compact on Migration”.
Amb. Shaukat highlighted the uniqueness of the Mediterranean Region as a migratory crossroad linking Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The Region has, in fact, always been vulnerable to migratory crisis and the situation has recently become more complex due to the war in Ukraine.
In addition, he underlined the need for migrants to have access to basic services and education. He also reiterated PAM’s call towards a definition of the concept of “environmental refugee” in international law, and urged governments to respect the Paris Agreement. PAM, he shared, will be present in Sharm el-Sheikh for the COP 27 deliberations to advocate the creation of a regional coalition on carbon neutrality.
Finally, Amb. Shaukat concluded that parliamentary diplomacy can be an effective tool to promote good practices and lessons learned and to that aim PAM was looking forward to this week’s discussions to move forward on safe, orderly and regular migration policies.
