31 October 2024, San Marino – Hon. Gabriel Amard (France), PAM Rapporteur on Water, and Hon. Massimo Andrea Ugolini (San Marino), the newly appointed Head of his National Delegation to PAM, met with Senior Officers of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) at its International Study Centre in San Marino.
MPs were provided with a presentation of the mandate and activities of the Assembly, including its cooperation with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED).
The work of the three Standing Committees, the ad hoc working groups, Economic Panel, Academic Platform, the Women Parliamentary Forum (WPF), and the Centre for Global Studies (CGS), was detailed, in addition to the initiatives in the pipeline. Hon. Ugolini conveyed his gratitude for the initiatives undertaken by the Assembly and reaffirmed San Marino’s commitment to supporting PAM’s objectives.
Further enriching the meeting, Hon. Amard discussed with PAM Staff additional details to finalize the draft version of his report on water, entitled “The Right to Safe and Clean Drinking Water and Sanitation as a Human Right ”, which will be presented at the 19th PAM Plenary Session in Rome, next February, kindly hosted by the Italian Parliament. He emphasized the concept of water as a fundamental right, transcending the notion of mere access. Water, he asserted, is a shared resource essential to all living beings, and the report aims, among other objectives, to underscore this principle, advocating for policies that reflect water’s universal significance, and the absolute need to protect oceans and rivers, as pillars of the life cycle.
Looking ahead, PAM will continue advancing collaboration with its Member States. Through collaborative initiatives, such as its membership in the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) and dedicated programs, the Assembly is committed to fostering resilience and sustainable development across the Euro Mediterranean and Gulf regions. //
