On 16 February 2024, Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterraneana contributed to the Seminar “Sustainability and Environmental Protection in European Micro-States: Environment and Energy” organized by the Segreteria di Stato per il Territorio, l’Ambiente, l’Agricoltura, la Protezione Civile e i Rapporti con AASLP – the San Marino Ministry for Environment.

The Seminar delved into diverse aspects of sustainable development, such as responsible land management, energy transition, climate change mitigation and adaptation and water-related issues, featuring discussions by politicians, experts, scholars, and private sector. The event underscored that sustainable development is a paramount challenge for San Marino.

PAM representative delivered substantive remarks at the opening session and explained PAM’s longstanding commitment towards sustainable urban development and its focus on environmental issues affecting all countries, including Micro-States  in Europe, which is also reflected in the Assembly’s decision to dedicate the 2024 Day of the Mediterranean, celebrated on 21 March every year, to the issue of “Innovation and Urban Sustainable Development”, as proposed by the Parliament of Andorra.

At the presence of the Heads of States of San Marino, and H.E. Mr Stefano Canti, Minister for Environment, the event was also the occasion for PAM to reaffirm the excellent relations between the Assembly and the Republic of San Marino, where PAM has also recently established its Strategic Think Tank, the Center for Global Studies (CGS), a special program of the Assembly. PAM also recalled that Hon. Adele Tonnini from San Marino has been appointed as the Assembly’s Special Rapporteur on Environmental Crimes, and her report will be presented at the forthcoming PAM 18th Plenary Session.//
