On 8 September, on the occasion of the First Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter-Terrorism held in Vienna, PAM President Hon. Gennaro Migliore, held a bilateral meeting with H.E.. Adel Bin Abdulrahman Al Asoomi, President of the Arab Parliament.
The discussion focused on a common strategy for counterterrorism in the Sahel region. The Presidents agreed on several key priorities, which include the promotion of inclusive economic development, investment in youth and marginalized communities, and supporting policies to target terrorist operations, recruitment, and financing, among others.
The Presidents also took the opportunity to discuss human rights issues in Europe and the Arab World. In this regard, the Arab Parliament praised PAM for being a valuable platform for intercultural dialogue between the parliaments of Europe, Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf, where each country is represented on an equal footing.
The meeting reinforced the excellent partnership between the two organizations, which was formalized in 2018 with a cooperation agreement. The Presidents agreed to continue working together on several critical issues in a bilateral manner, and to join forces with IPU and the GIP G5 Sahel to address counterterrorism in the region.
