The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the University of Catania, Italy, have signed an Memorandum of Understanding on the occasion of the 8th PAM Plenary Session currently being held in Marseille, France and hosted by the Presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate.
The agreement was signed by PAM Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, and the Rector of the University of Catania, Prof. Giacomo Pignataro, in the presence of PAM President, Sen. Francesco Amoruso.
“We need to create an interface between research and parliamentarians in order to facilitate development in the region”, Dr. Piazzi said.
On his part Prof. Pignataro underlined the fact that Universities can make a great contribution to the activities of PAM. “Education is essential to creating the conditions for peace and innovation. We need a euro-mediterranean area of research that is able to compete with the world giants in research and education such as China. We need to develop our own potential”, Prof. Pignataro concluded.
The MoU envisages a series of joint initiatives where parliamentarians, academics and students will share and exchange views and together forge concrete actions to improve education and support research in the Mediterranean region. //
