The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, represented by Amb. Qazi Shaukat Fareed, PAM Permanent Observer to the UN in New York, participated at the second Annual Sustainable Energy for All Forum (SE4ALL) convened on 18-21 May 2015.
The event focused its discussions on the upcoming September UN Summit that will adopt the post 2015 development agenda, of which the issue of sustainable energy is a key element, and the COP21 Conference on Climate Change in Paris on 30 November – 11 December.
The PAM representative also participated, at observer level, to the meeting of the Advisory Board chaired by Undersecretary-General and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Sustainable Energy for All initiative Mr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella.
PAM’s participation at the event reflects the ongoing commitment by the Assembly to sustainable development, which is one of the priority topics within the framework of the Energy Group of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments in the Mediterranean.
On the occasion of the Assembly’s Plenary Session held in Monaco last February, PAM adopted a Report and Resolution which, among other suggestions, recommends member parliaments to resort to the use of the Carbon Added Tax (CAT) as a way to stimulate the transition from fossil fuels to green energy sources.
Furthermore, in the framework of PAM’s efforts on environment related issues and climate change, the Assembly will participate at the MEDCOP21 (Marseille, 4-5 June) and at the COP21 (Paris, 30 November – 11 December).
