21-22 May 2024, UN Headquarters, New York – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) participated in the inaugural session of the International Dialogue on Migration 2024, convened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Amb. Shaukat Fareed, PAM Permanent Observer to the UN in New York, represented the Assembly on this occasion.
The conference brought together a diverse array of participants and served as a pivotal platform for engaging in high-level debates concerning migration issues and encompassing discussions on the effects of climate change on migration patterns and the significance of global cooperation.
The event also facilitated the exchange of best practices among stakeholders and represented an opportunity for stressing the importance of developing regular migration pathways.
On these issues, PAM reiterated its commitment to advocating for the Global Pact on Migration, and recalled the recently presented PAM Campaign against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants.
The initiative, which gained the support of the UNODC and its Blue Heart Campaign, aims at raising awareness among citizens and MPs, and assisting legislators in implementing effective measures against human trafficking and migrant smuggling. Its official launch is scheduled for the upcoming PAM Women Parliamentary Forum (WPF) in Paris, on 20-21 June 2024, as these phenomena often affect the most vulnerable scores of the population, including women and children.
PAM is also working on reinforcing its partnership with IOM and other international partners to effectively address migration challenges. The Assembly’s forthcoming initiatives will concentrate on strengthening legislative frameworks and continuing to promote safe and regular pathways, in harmony with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration. //
