From 21 to 27 September 2024, a High-Level Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), led by H.E. Hon. Enaam Mayara, PAM President and President of the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco will attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held at the UN Headquarters in New York. The PAM delegation will also include senior representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Italy, Portugal, Romania, and Türkiye, and will actively participate in high-level meetings and the General Debate of the UNGA.
The 79th General Assembly comes at the crossroads for the international community and the UN, as the Summit of the Future is expected to address the reform of the current international institutions, while tackling today’s global crises, from the war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the civil strive in Sudan, to climate change and the uncontrolled development of digital technologies.
This year, the General Debate, which will formally open on 24 September and continue until 30 September, is dedicate to: “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
In addition, on 21 September 2024, for the first time, PAM will organize a High-Level Parliamentary Side-Event in junction with the Summit of the Future, titled “Parliamentary Support in Re-Establishing Trust and Reputation in Multilateral Governance.” The event was organized with the support of the PAM Centre for Global Studies (CGS), represented by its Chairman Ambassador Dr AlMadani (UAE), and in partnership with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), and sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Italy and Morocco to the UN in New York, The PAM side-event will address the crucial role of Parliaments in restoring trust in international governance and explore the nexus between parliamentary principles and the use of AI and emerging technologies.
Furthermore, Hon. Mayara will actively contribute to the Summit of the Future itself, on 22 September, reaffirming PAM’s commitment to advancing the implementation of the Summit’s key initiatives—including the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations.
On the same day, Hon. Beragmini (Italy), PAM Rapporteur on Political Affairs, will represent the Assembly at the Interactive Dialogues of the Summit of the Future. In the session dedicated to “Enhancing Multilateralism for International Peace and Security,” she will highlight the essential role of parliamentary diplomacy in achieving a coordinated and effective international response to global challenges.
Throughout the week, high-level delegates of the PAM Women Parliamentary Forum (WPF), led by President Joanna Lima (Portugal), will engage with Women Political Leaders (WPL) meetings, focusing on advancing gender equality and supporting women’s leadership in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.
Finally, on 27 September, Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal), PAM Vice-President and President of the 3rd Standing Committee, will contribute to the High-Level Meeting of the UNAOC Group of Friends, focusing on promoting intercultural dialogue and fostering mutual understanding between civilizations.
