20 February 2025, Rome, Italy – During the first day of the 19th Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), the recipients of the prestigious 2025 PAM Awards were announced. This annual recognition honors personalities and institutions that promote and advance PAM’s mission and values across the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.
This year, among the awardees were two distinguished leaders, globally recognized for their outstanding contributions to peace, democracy, and humanitarian efforts:
- H.E Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic, is awarded the PAM Award as Champion of Peace and Democracy for his steadfast dedication to upholding democracy and freedom.
- H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco receives the PAM Award as Champion of Peace and Humanitarian Assistance, recognizing his outstanding humanitarian efforts to support vulnerable populations worldwide.
In addition, PAM conferred several awards to recognize achievements in strategic fields aligned with the Assembly’s key priorities:
- The PAM Scientific Award to Prof. Derrick de Kerckhove, Scientific Director of MediaDuemila, for his innovative contributions to scientific research on artificial intelligence and the interconnections between society, culture, and technology.
- The PAM Energy Transition Award to Mr. Mourad Adjal (Algeria), President and Director General of Sonelgaz, for his efforts in enhancing Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and promoting renewable energy development through synergies between electricity network associations, as well as affordable energy for all Euro-Mediterranean countries.
- The PAM Women’s Empowerment Awad to Stati Generali delle Donne (Italy), for their exceptional commitment to promoting women’s participation in institutional life through the project “Le Città delle Donne”, as well as to the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS), for its contribution to advancing gender equality and combating sexism and gender bias in media coverage across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
- The PAM Award for Promoting Education and Peaceful Co-Existence to Mr. Per Setterberg (Sweeden), for his generosity in funding scholarships for young researchers from Israel and Palestine to study at the PAM Study Center in San Marino—an initiative fostering peaceful co-existence in the region.
