The 19th Bureau Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean will be held on 30 January 2012 in Amman, Jordan at the invitation of the Jordanian Parliament. This will also be the first Bureau meeting for the new PAM President, H.E. Fayez Tarawneh (Jordan), who was elected in October 2011, on the occasion of the VI PAM Plenary Session, held in Palermo, Italy.
The first Bureau Meeting for 2012, will be an extended activity, since apart from the elected members, it will include the participation of the Rapporteurs responsible for the topics chosen by the Assembly at the Palermo Plenary. These include Unemployment and job creation, Education, Natural hazards, Energy, Food security and the activities of the PAM Panel on economic issues in the region.
The Amman meeting will be particularly significant in that a series of high level consultations on the situation in the Middle East, will take place. Hearings will be held with the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nasser Judeh; the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Amb. Robert H. Serry, and also with high representatives of the Arab League, who will brief on the ongoing mission in Syria. For the current year PAM has extended the scope of its Ad hoc Committee on the Middle East, in order to include the new geo-political situation in the Arab Spring countries, with the objective to further consolidate its actions and concurrently elaborate a more strategic operational role in the reform process at the constitutional and parliamentary levels.
“PAM is called upon by the citizens of these countries to assist wherever possible in the building up of new democratic institutions, and in Amman we will discuss how PAM will continue with its efforts and actions to support these processes in the most appropriate way”, PAM President, Sen. Fayez Tarawneh said.
