2 March 2023, Rabat, Morocco – he second and last day of the PAM 17th Plenary Session was dedicated to the activities of the 1st Standing Committee on Political and Security-related Cooperation, the election of the PAM Bureau for the biennium 2023-2024, the presentation and adoption of the management and financial reports 2022, and cost plan 2023, the nomination of the PAM Prizes 2023, and the transfer of Presidency to H.E. Enaam Mayara, of Morocco.
At the closing ceremony of the 17th Plenary Session, the Secretary General of PAM, announced the results of the election for the new Presidency and Bureau of PAM.
H.E. Sen. Enaam Mayara (Morocco), Speaker of the House of Councillors of Morocco, has been elected as the new President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean for the biennium 2023-2024.
Sen. Marie-Arlette Carlotti (France), Hon. Nissim Vaturi (Israel), Hon. Giulio Centemero (Italy), Sen. Alia Bouran (Jordan), Hon. Belal Qasem (Palestine), , Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal), , and Hon. Abdulla Nasser Turki Al-Subaey (Qatar) are the members of the PAM’s Bureau for the same period.
Within the new Bureau, Sen. Alia Bouran (Jordan) has been confirmed as the President of the 1st Standing Committee on Political and Security related Cooperation; Hon. Giulio Centemero (Italy), Co-Chair of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments, has been elected as President of the 2nd Standing Committee on Economic, Social and Environmental Cooperation; and Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal) will chair the 3rd Standing Committee on Dialogue among Civilisation and Human Rights.
H.E. Sen. Enaam Mayara, the incoming PAM President, in his acceptance speech, presented the program for his mandate: namely, promoting the common values of the Mediterranean countries; working towards a spirit of solidarity that fosters the exchange of knowledge and expertise; strengthening the economic components of the Assembly’s agenda; and consolidating joint action among PAM parliaments, and broadening membership to more Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Among others, he suggested considering enlarging the Bureau to reflect the broader geopolitical scope of the Assembly, secure the presence of the Palestinian and Israeli Representatives, as well as to create a forum of Secretaries General of National Parliaments of the PAM and a network of staff officers.
At the conclusion of the Plenary Session, Hon. Pedro Roque, PAM outgoing President, thanked all the participants and speakers, who permitted to share ideas and views about the main strategic issues for the region, and congratulated President Mayara for his election.//
