7-11 November 2022, Vienna – The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized, at the UNHQ in Vienna, the Second Resumed Thirteenth Session of the Implementation Review Group of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. On this occasion, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) was represented by Hon. Gennaro Migliore, PAM President Emeritus.
The meeting aimed at sharing relevant information on successes, good practices, challenges, and observations, in order to ensure the effective implementation of the Convention and of any activities, by national and regional institutions, to prevent and combat corruption.
In his intervention, Hon. Migliore affirmed that “corruption is a danger for every country, due to the increasing role of transnational criminal networks and the interdependence between national economies and systems. Corruption hinders the growth of national economies, the respect of human rights and societal wellbeing, and the functioning of political institutions.”
He also reiterated that parliamentarians have a key role in the fight against corruption, because they are at the forefront in overseeing the implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption, providing, or improving the legal frameworks needed to enable other national actors to do their part.
The outcomes of this meeting will be reflected in PAM’s future recommendations and deliberations. PAM remains strongly committed to actively engage with the governments, the United Nations, and any other regional or international organizations, in order to maximize efforts, and facilitate the highest degree of cooperation, necessary to tackle the exponentially growing transnational aspects of this crime.//
