The 9th “Annual Convention on the Mediterranean (CSRMed)” was held in Naples, Italy. It gathered stakeholders from the private sector, specialized institutions, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations. It included a series of events, workshops, and seminars tackling the process of change for a greener and more sustainable Mediterranean. The principal aim of the Convention was to take stock of the state of implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and the opportunities and challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region in the future.
This year, PAM had the honor of being member of the panel opening the conference. On behalf of PAM, Ambassador Sergio Piazzi warned “we’re driving at high speed on a motorway ready to crash into a wall”. He reiterated UNSG Guterres’ alert about how critical the climate situation is. He further noted that the Paris Agreement’s goals were never reached, adding that we are now at 2.8 degrees of temperature rise in the Mediterranean area, much above the 1.5 set in Paris. This warming will lead to conflicts over food, water and energy insecurities as well as new waves of migrations.
Proceeding from PAM’s belief that such a climate disaster will spare no one, the Assembly has called for a joint collective action as the only way to counter this threat that knows no boundaries. Thus, PAM wants to promote a DAVOS of the Mediterranean to discuss these important issues. PAM President, Hon. Migliore also made a proposal to establish a “Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Community on Renewable Energies” to promote collective action between the private sector, parliaments, and governments.
Amb. Piazzi underlined that PAM was and remains an important partner of the CSRMed, contributing with the latest updates on green energy and a more sustainable PAM region. PAM will continue its efforts and encourage further cooperation on the topic among its Member Parliaments in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region.
