A high level delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean has returned from a field mission to Syria.
PAM Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, held a series of bilateral meetings in Damascus with the President and senior members of the Syrian Parliament, Government Ministers, United Nations Humanitarian Agencies and the Office of UN-Arab League Special Envoy Brahimi, as well as with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation and the Apostolic Nunciature.
The meetings dealt with the delicate issues of humanitarian access, facilitation of humanitarian aid delivery and confidence building measures within the framework of the process for national reconciliation between the Syrian parties in the internal conflict. The issue relative to the displacement of the Syrian population in the country and in neighboring states, along with that of the Palestinian refugees, was also discussed.
The mission continued in Beirut, Lebanon, with a high level meeting with the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly. The exchange focused on the situation in Syria and along the borders between the two countries, with the possible consequences for the stability of Lebanon and the region as a whole.
A detailed briefing of the mission will be held at the PAM Headquarters in Malta for the Ambassadors accredited to Malta, including those abroad, on Friday 5 July. The diplomatic corps will be informed about the outcome of the mission and follow up actions agreed in Damascus.
