The Presidential elections held in Egypt on 23-24 May 2012, represent a historical milestone in the quest of the Egyptian people to turn their country into a democracy, where the citizens are the major actors of their destiny. The overwhelming participation of the population in the presidential polls is a clear sign that the process, started with courage and determination in Tahrir Square, is bearing its fruits.
PAM is resolved to accompany this process in the most democratic way, through the facilitation of dialogue and compromise between the representatives of the citizens. PAM is ready to assist, in cooperation with the national parliament, in the implementation of all those processes that the Egyptians will freely choose in full respect of the local culture and aspirations.
PAM, as an organization of national parliaments, is well aware that there is no one standard model of democracy for all, and based on this conviction, the rise of the Egyptians to a democratic society, will be supported, as long as the fundamental human rights of every single citizen are guaranteed.
Egypt is an important partner within the Mediterranean region, and PAM is committed to ensure that it continues to play a leading role in the achievement of stability, security and peace for the benefit of all the populations of the area.
