The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Sen. Francesco Amoruso (Italy) is leading a PAM High level delegation in New York and Washington to participate at the 69th United Nations General Assembly and a for a series of bilateral meetings, including the American administration.
Sen. Amoruso is accompanied by the Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Senator Lhou Lmarbouh (Morocco), PAM Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, and Deputy Secretary-General for PAM Assembly Affairs, Mr. Mourad Youssry.
The first meeting was held with H. E. Amb. Raimonda Murmokaite, Permanent Representative of Lithuania, and Chair of the UN Security Council Committee for Counter Terrorism (CTC). This meeting follows on a recent visit to the PAM Headquarters in Malta by a delegation from the UN Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) of New York and the UN Terrorism Prevention Branch Division for Treaty Affairs of Vienna.
In view of the excellent and longstanding relations between PAM with the UN Security Council and other relevant UN specialized bodies the delegation requested the assistance of PAM to work together on the implementation of national and regional legislative aspects of international Counter Terrorism initiatives, including those related to resolutions being considered by the UN Security Council under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, and also jointly organize, in early 2015, a regional seminar dedicated to PAM Parliamentarians from the Maghreb region. The event would be part of the EU/UNODC/CTED Programme on Supporting rule-of-law-compliant investigations and prosecutions in the Maghreb region.
On Tuesday, issues related to the current situation in the Middle East will be discussed with Amb. Robert Serry, Special Coordinator to the UN Secretary General for the Middle East. PAM and Amb. Serry are constantly in close contact, with PAM offering its assistance, particularly in the humanitarian aspect addressing the needs of the civilian populations of the region.
PAM will also contribute to the UN International Summit on Climate Change, where the special requirements of the Mediterranean will be highlighted.
