PAM Honorary President and Head of the Italian delegation, Senator Francesco Amoruso, addressed the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session, held in Tbilisi, on 26-29 May 2017. The session focused mainly on issues pertaining to Eastern Europe, Food and Water Security in the Middle East and North Africa, and Potential Economic Consequences of Climate Change, among others. The President of Ukraine attended the event along with other political leaders.
Issues, which Sen. Amoruso said are of specific interest to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, due to the fact that the region is particularly vulnerable and needs to address these concerns on a regular basis.
With regards to international security, Sen. Amoruso highlighted the excellent collaboration between PAM and the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee / CTED and UNODC, particularly in the context of parliamentary diplomacy and the transformation of UN Security Council Resolutions into national legal frameworks.
Sen. Amoruso also referred to the upcoming Special Meeting in New York on “International Judicial and Law Enforcement Cooperation in Counter-Terrorism Matters pursuant to Security Council resolutions”, organised by the UN SC Counter-Terrorism Committee / CTED, where PAM will contribute in representation of the Mediterranean Parliaments.
“The Mediterranean is a region of a multitude of social, economic and political complexities which first and foremost have to be addressed at the national and regional level. Globalisation has further highlighted the centrality of the region in the wider international context. “Peace, security and stability in the Mediterranean can provide the conditions for a more equitable and stable international order in which the ultimate beneficiaries are the citizens”, Sen. Amoruso concluded.
