PAM is deeply concerned by the drowning of refugees and migrants in the shipwreck off the coast of Tunisia

PAM expresses its deep sorrow for the loss of 41 people, including one child, in a shipwreck off the coast of Tunisia. The Sub-Saharan Africa migrants were attempting to cross the Mediterranean sea. PAM notes with great distress that 2021 is proving to be particularly deadly with many lives lost, compared to the number of victims in the same period in 2020.

PAM shares the concern of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) over the alarming situation of migrants and refugees who risk their lives, looking for a better future. PAM underscores the need for a safe and orderly migration and to enhance and expand State-led search and rescue operations across the Central Mediterranean.

PAM on this occasion also wishes to recall its resolution dedicated to "The Mediterranean dimension of a Global Compact on Migration and of a Global Compact on Refugees”, adopted in February 2018 during the PAM 12th Plenary Session, held in Bucharest.
