17 April 2024, New York – A high-level delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) met with H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The PAM delegation led by Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal), PAM Vice-President, included H.E. Hon. Mohammed Abou El Enein, Vice-President of the Egyptian Parliament and PAM President Emeritus; Hon. Giulio Centemero (Italy), PAM Vice-President; H.E. Amb. Dr. Abdulsalam AlMadani (UAE), PAM Roving Ambassador for the GCC and Chairman of the PAM/CGS; Hon. Gennaro Migliore(Italy), PAM President Emeritus and Director of the PAM/CGS; Amb. Hon. Majallie Whbee (Israel), PAM Roving Ambassador; Amb. Qazi Shaukat Fareed, PAM Permanent Observer to the UN in New York, and PAM Secretary General.

The meeting addressed, among others, the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the urgent need for regional political solutions; the ongoing PAM/UN cooperation on threats posed by the malicious use of AI; preparations for the Summit of the Future; the protracted Russian aggression against Ukraine; the stagnating reconciliation efforts in Libya, and the support for UNIFIL on the Blue Line.

The UN Secretary-General commended the crucial role of PAM’s parliamentary diplomacy to advance international peace and development efforts in the region.

PAM remains persistent in its commitment to cooperating with the UN in fostering sustainable solutions for peace and security for the benefit of people in the Euro Mediterranean and Gulf countries, and beyond. //
