9 November 2022, Rimini (Italy) – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) participated in the 25th edition of Ecomondo, the Green Technology Expo. On this occasion, PAM contributed to the activities of the first online TV special debates, created by Acquedotto Pugliese, and dedicated entirely to water issues.
PAM President Emeritus, Sen. Francesco Amoruso, and PAM SG attended the event.
Sen. Amoruso was interviewed by Mr. Sergio Luciano, Director of the online magazine “Economy”.
During the interview, Sen. Amoruso remined that over the years, PAM has adopted various reports and resolutions to encourage its delegates to work together and achieve tangible results on the issue of shared water resource management, recognition of the inescapable water-food-resource-energy nexus, and support toward initiatives to educate young people to make conscious use of this resource.
To reach this aim, the Assembly is committed with its national delegations to set up a regional water authority and ensure a fair and proper management of common water resources, as key element for peace and stability in the region.
PAM SG participated in the session on the “International Networks of Water”, together with Mr. Dino Fortunato, Investment Promotion Expert – Technology Promotion Office at the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Franco Cavallaro, Member of the Board of the Association of Engineering and Consulting Organizations.
PAM SG drew attention to the climate crisis looming over the Euro-Mediterranean region, where, the symbolic limit of temperature rise of 1.5 degrees, compared to pre-industrial values, has been crossed long time ago.
In the Mediterranean Basin, average temperatures are between 2 and 3.8 degrees above pre-industrial levels, and, very worryingly, scientists from France, Monaco and Italy measured, last summer, a dangerous rise in the temperature of the Tirrenian Sea between 3 and 5 degrees. He recalled the words of the UN Secretary General at the High-Level Opening Session of COP27, according to which: “We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.”//
