The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) contributed to the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (5WCSP) in Vienna, Austria, from 6 to 8 September 2021.
The 5th WCSP provided a unique opportunity for direct collaboration and discussions between more than 500 delegates from over 110 countries. At its conclusion, the conference adopted a Declaration on Parliamentary leadership for effective multilateralism to deliver peace and sustainable development for the people and planet.
PAM President, Hon. Migliore (Italy), in his interventions tackled the impact of Covid 19, the threat of terrorism after the events in Afghanistan , the economic and political crises in the MENA region, the new waves of refugees and the climate change emergency.
Hon. Migliore underlined the threats facing the PAM region due to new waves of migration to the northern shores of the Mediterranean which had recently saw relative stabilisation. He also warned against the frail socio-economic situation and the political instability in its southern
shores, especially in Syria, Libya, Tunisia and Lebanon. He urged attendees to address the migration issues to avoid more losses of lives.
PAM President held a number of bilateral meetings with the parliamentary leadership of Spain, Libya, Turkey, Cyprus, UAE, Egypt, as well as MPs from Tunisia and the President of the Arab Parliament. On the margins of the event, consultations also took place with high level officials from the UN.
