14 September 2024, Amman, Jordan – H.E. Hon. Enaam Mayara, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), and President of the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, led a high-level delegation to Amman, composed by Sen. Alia Bouran (Jordan), PAM Vice-President, Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal), PAM-Vice-President, Hon. Belal Qasem (Palestine), PAM Vice-President, and PAM Secretariat, to present the prestigious PAM Award to His Majesty Abdullah II Al Hussein, King of Jordan.
The Award, already announced on the occasion of the PAM 18th Plenary Session in Braga, Portugal, last May, was handed to H.E. Mr. Faisal Al-Fayez, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Jordan, on behalf of the King of Jordan. It was granted for the humanitarian aid that Jordan, one of the first countries to respond, has provided to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip, in exceptionally difficult circumstances.
In fact, day and night airlift operations by the Jordanian air force, in which His Majesty himself took part with great courage, have enabled humanitarian and food supplies to be dropped to the civilian population of Gaza since the very first days of the war between Hamas and Israel.
In his speech, President Mayara recalled that Jordan plays a key role in the region, and actively contributes to peace and stability in the Middle East, especially now in “difficult” times, when the Palestinian people, including children and women, are subjected to daily killings and flagrant violations of the principles of International Law and International Humanitarian Law. Within PAM, the Jordanian parliamentary delegation plays the same role of respected mediator among the Assembly’s member countries.
In his acceptance remarks, H.E. Mr. Faisal Al-Fayez expressed deep gratitude for this prestigious recognition, underscoring King Abdullah II’s unwavering dedication to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
His Majesty’s tireless work includes leading humanitarian operations, establishing a vital aid corridor through Jordan, and the opening of a second field hospital in Gaza. His Majesty has also been instrumental in mobilizing the international community, ensuring that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains a priority on the global agenda.
PAM reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen cooperation with Jordan, praising His Majesty’s unwavering humanitarian leadership and echoing the urgent call for the unimpeded flow of aid to Gaza, an immediate ceasefire to alleviate civilian suffering, and the swift release of all hostages. The meeting was an opportunity to recall the support for the Two-State Solution, where both Israeli and Palestinian people can live side-by-side in peace and security. //
