PAM participated in the ISPI MED Parliamentary Forum in Rome. The event, held in a hybrid form, was organized by the Committee on Foreign and EU Affairs of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and the Foreign Affairs and Emigration Committee of the Italian Senate, and gathered parliamentarians from the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf countries.
Hon. Gennaro Migliore, PAM President, addressed the high-level panel on several pressing issues that the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions are facing. Hon. Migliore stated “From PAM long experience, parliamentary diplomacy has proven to be one of the most effective instruments in international relations to support political cooperation and concrete initiatives in the broader Mediterranean region. It allows dialogue and flexibility, even when there are significant tensions at the governmental level, or in the absence of diplomatic relations.”
Then, Hon. Migliore’s speech touched upon a number of topics of the utmost interest for the broader Mediterranean; such as, inclusive and peaceful political transition processes in the MENA region; vaccine diplomacy; mass migration policies; environmental preservation; climate change; cultural heritage in the Mediterranean, and post-COVID economic recovery. In this regard, he explained to have launched the initiative to establish the “Mediterranean Community for Renewable Energy”, which would represent a catalyst to enhanced partnership among all countries from the two shores of the Mediterranean and the Gulf to cooperate towards investing into shared economic approach – considering ecological and geopolitical interests.
Hon. Migliore pointed out that the strength of PAM lays in its unique design of bringing a geopolitical balance between northern and southern countries. PAM contributes to a culture of greater mutual understanding among national parliaments and governments in key areas, with a direct impact on the security and development of the region. Over the past months, PAM has engaged in strengthening longstanding and new partnerships in the Mediterranean and the Gulf to foster further cooperation.
