On 7 June 2021, Hon. Gennaro Migliore addressed on-line the opening session of the First Economic Forum for Libya, in his capacity as the newly elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM).
The event was organized by the Italian Libyan Business Development Association (ILBDA). The meeting, held in Tunis, gathered a diverse group of stakeholders from the private sector and business associations, MPs from Libya and Italy, diplomatic corps and civil society.
Hon. Migliore expressed support for all the actors who gathered with the aim to rebuild the Libyan economy following years of conflict, aggravated by the COVID pandemic. He stressed that now is an opportune time to do so, based on the positive developments in the Libyan-owned political process of national reconciliation.
Hon. Migliore offered to leverage PAM’s association with the private sector, policy makers and financial institutions to help Libya rebuild. He highlighted that PAM has a strong network of partnerships with financial institutions and leading development organizations, including the World Bank, IMF, European Investment Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, World Trade Organization, UNCTAD and OECD, among others. One of the key next steps could be to revive the initiative to organize a mission of the Italian Confindustria and representatives of the productive sector from other countries of the region to Libya, under the auspices of PAM.
The President also underlined that PAM has a duty to support the reconstruction process in Libya and that PAM has worked very actively with authorities in Tripoli, Tobruk, and all Libyan actors throughout the crises of recent years. At present, PAM is coordinating with the Libyan Parliament for a PAM electoral monitoring mission to travel to Tripoli next December.
