22 September 2024, UNHQ, New York – H.E. Hon. Enaam Mayara, President of PAM and President of the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, addressed the Plenary Session of the Summit of the Future.
The Summit of the Future convenes world leaders for a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine the multilateral system of governance and lead humanity on a new course to address long-term challenges. The Summit focuses on reiterating political commitments and strengthening international cooperation in key areas, such as sustainable development, digital transformation, global peace, and protecting future generations.
In his opening address, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms of global governance, aimed at enhancing their legitimacy, inclusiveness, and effectiveness. He urged all Member States to engage in collective action toward establishing a more equitable and resilient global order that ensures lasting peace, stability, and prosperity for all peoples.
Furthermore, he highlighted the critical need to address widening geopolitical divides, the escalating threats posed by nuclear proliferation, the ongoing climate change crisis, and the challenges arising from rapid technological advancements, especially in Artificial Intelligence, which currently lack adequate governance mechanisms.
In his intervention, H.E. Hon. Mayara reiterated PAM’s commitment to supporting the Summit’s objectives, including the implementation of the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations. He highlighted the importance of reinforcing multilateral institutions and stressed that both national and international decision-making processes should take into account the interests of future generations.
President Mayara announced two significant initiatives supported by PAM to contribute to these objectives. First, the establishment of a Permanent Parliamentary Observatory for the Global South for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), based in Morocco. Second, the establishment of a Permanent Global Parliamentary Observatory on AI and Emerging Technologies, managed by the PAM’s Centre for Global Studies (CGS), in San Marino.
In his conclusions, President Mayara invited to use the voice of reason and wisdom to halt the conflict in the Middle East, which is resulting in more extremism, violence, and hate. He stressed that the Two-State Solution is the only way forward to guarantee the independence of the State of Palestine and the security of Israel.
PAM will continue contributing to the efforts of the United Nations and other international stakeholders to advance such vital goals. //
