The 4th Edition of the World Youth Forum (WYF) took place in Egypt, under the auspices of H.E. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The high-level Forum was attended by more than 7.000 young people and guest speakers from 197 countries. Hon. Abou El-Enein, President Emeritus of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, represented PAM at the event.
Hon. Abou El-Enein was invited to address the “Energy Paths: Orientation towards a Safer Future” session of the WYF, during which he explained that the overlap of the issues relating to Climate Change, Energy and the COVID Pandemic is the biggest current challenge. In addressing the question “How do we solve this problem? He indicated: “Last year, 2021, was the year with the highest rate of Environmental pollution in History with the increased demand and use of fossil Energies.” He further explained that in order to be self-sufficient in renewable energies, we need an International Initiative because countries are already facing technological and financial problems. In his view, Africa alone has the potential to supply the whole world in renewable energies. PAM President Emeritus then said that the “World needs to spend 4 trillions dollars every year if we want to reach the 0% emissions from fossil fuel use”.
H.E Abou El-Enein stated that in this Energy Crisis there are no winners or losers, and to solve this crisis international cooperation is the essential factor to overcome it.
For PAM, International Cooperation is essential especially in the context of Climate Change particularly because the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions are very sensitive to temperature raise. A problem that could cause a reduction of fresh water and crops, so resulting in mass migrations. In this regard, PAM is promoting the establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Community of Renewable Energy.//
