4 March 2022 – Naples, the Royal Palace. The States General of the Mediterranean took place. This event was attended by Italian authorities, among which the Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi, the Minister for the South Ms Mara Carfagna and the Representative of the Ministry of Interior Prefetto Claudio Palomba. Sen. Francesco Amoruso, PAM President Emeritus, addressed the meeting on behalf of PAM and President Migliore.
Sen. Amoruso addressed the panel on “Special Economic Zones (SEZ): Opportunities for Development”. During his speech, the PAM President Emeritus stressed PAM’s firm condemnation of the ignominious and coward Russian aggression of Ukraine. He warned about the war’s long-term consequences on the world economy, by analysing the current market trends: “we have already seen a dramatic surge in inflation, energy prices and disruption of financial markets, due to the looming sanctions.”
Furthermore, Sen. Amoruso talked about the role that SEZ can play in fostering sustainable development, not only in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf area and in its least developed regions, but also at the global level. Such an initiative will foster cooperation, peace and prosperity in the region, which is more important than ever in such times.
Sen. Francesco Amoruso concluded his intervention by recalling the upcoming PAM Plenary Session. “After this meeting, I will be heading directly to Dubai, where I will be able to share the conclusions of this event before a high-level audience of 34 countries from the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.” PAM 16th Plenary Session will start in Dubai next week; 9 – 10 of March.
