The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean expresses its satisfaction following the decision to suspend hostilities and to withdraw military forces after the 3 week conflict between Israeli troops and Hamas militants in Gaza and Southern Israel.
The PAM appreciates the peace initiatives undertaken by European leaders and prizes diplomatic efforts by Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, in facilitating achieving the ceasefire and the inter-Palestinian dialogue.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean reiterates its unconditional commitment to the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, including the full support for the peace process in the Middle East with Israel and Palestine living side by side within mutually-recognized borders. The Charter of the Mediterranean, launched a few weeks ago and unanimously approved by PAM’s members at the Plenary Session in Monaco, held from 13-15 November 2008, considers the Middle East issue as an area of priority, which is also reflected in the establishment of an Ad hoc Committee. The Committee has already produced a report and a resolution on the Middle East compiled by the Hon. Dr. George Vella (Malta), both endorsed and unanimously adopted in Monaco last November.
PAM takes the opportunity to further urge all its members to sustain in a tangible manner any efforts and initiatives at national and international level to provide the much needed resources required to reconstruct critical civilian infrastructures, and the vital humanitarian aid to the affected population, so hardly hit during the last dramatic weeks.
PAM insists that, now that all sides have responsibly decided in favour of a ceasefire, the main actors and the international community should strive more forcefully to close this despicable chapter of violence and look forward in the hope of a long-lasting truce and in the achievement of an overall and permanent solution for peaceful living in the region.
In the emergency phase, and in close coordination with the PAM President, the Hon. Rudy Salles, and in line with the Assembly’s remit, the PAM Secretary General, Dr. Sergio Piazzi, has
held, since the outset of the armed confrontation, regular contacts with all major stakeholders, including Heads of diplomatic missions of the countries concerned, the UN and other International Aid Agencies, and has kept national parliaments of PAM informed of rolling developments.
As a further step in its contribution to a peaceful settlement of the Mideast issue, President Salles will be paying a visit to the UN Headquarters in New York in February for consultations with top UN officials in preparation of a PAM diplomatic mission in the Middle East by a delegation of PAM Bureau members.
