PAM Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, met with Dr. Fadeel Mohammed Atayeb Lameen, Chairman of the National Dialogue Preparatory Commission for Libya, at the Assembly’s Headquarters in Malta, on 17 March 2015.
The current developments in Libya were discussed, and it was noted that further armed conflict will only worsen the situation and provide space for extremist groups. Both expressed their concern about the increasing presence of the so-called Islamic State, or Daesh, in Libya. They confirmed the full support to the UN SG Special Representative for Libya, Amb. Bernardino Leon, for his work in promoting dialogue between the Libyan parties.
The proactive role of PAM was underlined, particularly in the light of the recent meeting between PAM Bureau members and a Libyan Parliamentary delegation in Rome, and the facilitation work provided by PAM to support the ongoing negotiations hosted by Morocco.
