In the wake of the latest developments concerning the possible international intervention in Syria, following the use of chemical weapons, and the dramatic increase of Syrians fleeing the internal conflict, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) will this week step-up international peace efforts as well as further assist in the coordination and facilitation of the humanitarian assistance in Syria and the neighbouring countries offering refuge to over two million people.
PAM Secretary General, Ambassador Sergio Piazzi, on Tuesday 10 September, will be in Geneva for a series of high-level bilateral talks with senior UN Officials and other leading personalities to discuss short and long term actions and strategies.
Meetings are scheduled with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, H.E. António Guterres, the UN Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, H.E. Kyung-wha Kang, and the UN-League of Arab States Joint Special Representative, H.E. Lakhdar Brahimi.
The situation in the MENA region will also be discussed in the coming days in Brussels, with the Office of H.E. Baroness Catherine Ashton, Vice-president and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The role of the EU in the Mediterranean and PAM’s commitment to peace and stability will be the main focus of the bilateral meeting.
