A few hours ahead of the UN Security Council vote on Resolution 1973 in connection with
Libya, the UN Special Mission in the Mediterranean, composed of UN Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon’s Special Envoy for Libya, H.E. Abdel Elah Al Khatib, Mr. Rashid Khalikov, Director
of OCHA in Geneva and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, and Mr. Taye-Brook Zerihoun,
UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, met with the Secretary General of the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Dr. Sergio Piazzi, with whom discussions were
held on the latest developments in Libya and the region.
During the delegation’s short stop-over in Malta, PAM also assisted, through its diplomatic
network, in facilitating the procedures for the granting of flight clearance to Cairo, for the UN
aircraft on its way from Libya to Egypt.
