PAM Statement on Gaza ceasefire

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean joins the Secretary-General of the United Nations in welcoming the announcement yesterday of a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel.  PAM grieves the loss of life and injuries among civilians, including children, from airstrikes in Gaza and the indiscriminate firing of rockets toward Israel from population centers in Gaza by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other militant groups.

The hostilities have contributed to worsen a humanitarian crisis, which needs to be addressed at its root causes. PAM together with the UN Secretary-General calls on all sides to observe the ceasefire.

PAM wishes to commend the Government and Parliament of Egypt for their concrete efforts to help restore calm.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean reiterates the commitment of its members to the achievement of the two-State solution based on relevant United Nations resolutions, international law, and prior agreements and the importance of restoring a political process.

PAM Members are convinced that only a negotiated, sustainable and just political solution shall put an end to violence and lead to a peaceful future for both Palestinian and Israeli people.
