PAM Vice-President, Hon. Belal Qasem (Palestine), participated at the Conference for Parliamentary actions for nuclear disarmament, organised by the Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), in Vienna on 5 May 2017.
The PNND reports to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee in Vienna on parliamentary actions around the world to promote the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones and to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world.
Hon Belal said that the work of the Assembly on security threats is not limited to terrorism, since it follows with great interest the international dialogue on disarmament, a key issue to reach a stable and peaceful Mediterranean. PAM is very active on security related issues, especially in this particular moment for the region.
“Parliamentarians play a fundamental role in the implementation of coherent and harmonized legal frameworks in all security-related matters, and PAM tries to promote this harmonization and coherence at a regional level, by participating and promoting international debates on this theme”, Hon. Belal said. It is the duty of PAM to favour stable conditions in order to ensure the well-being of the region’s populations and to cooperate on these critical issues, in particular on the Middle Eastern flank.
Finally, Hon Belal said that the Assembly looks forward to continuing strengthening its cooperation with common initiatives on security threats and disarmament policies, since cooperation is crucial to actively fight destabilizing and dangerous phenomena.
