The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) reiterates its full commitment and support to the ongoing efforts for the resolution of the Cypriot issue, following the announcement that the UN Secretary-General, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, will host a joint meeting with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities on 23-24 January at the Greentree Estate in Long Island, New York.
A statement, attributable to the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, underlines the fact that this is the fifth time that H.E. Ban Ki-moon is meeting with Cypriot President H.E. Demetris Christofias and the Turkish-Cypriot leader Mr. Dervis Eroglu, in the framework of the Cyprus negotiations. “The UN Secretary-General looks forward to a productive meeting and concrete progress”, the statement added.
“The United Nations continues to provide all possible support to the Cypriot-led negotiations and PAM is fully behind these initiatives through its parliamentary diplomacy strategic efforts. A positive and long term outcome of this issue, will be not only beneficial to Cyprus, but also to the stability of the Mediterranean region as a whole”, PAM Secretary General, Dr. Sergio Piazzi said.
In the UN statement, H.E. Ban Ki-moon has conveyed his expectations to both leaders for a resolution of this longstanding issue and once again expressed his belief that with political will and firm commitment they can and should reach a much-needed settlement on Cyprus.
