Catania, 2-5 June – On the first weekend of June, the Mediterranean Citizens Festival took place in the city of Catania thanks to the European Commission and MED Dialogue. The festival gathering over a hundred authors, artists, activists and entrepreneurs was held with the aim of celebrating a vibrant Mediterranean, identifying current challenges and how best to respond to them.
PAM President, Hon Gennaro Migliore, spoke during the Opening ceremony together with Mr. Roberto Bonaccorsi, Acting Mayor of Catania, H.E. Mara Carfagna, Minister for the South and Territorial Cohesion of Italy, Ms Ingrid Schwaiger, DG NEAR of the European Commissin, the archbishop of Catania, Mons. Luigi Renna, the writer Khaled Mansoor and the cartoonist Yorgos Konstantinou.
President Migliore stated that PAM ambition has always been to bring Mediterranean countries closer together, to build as many bridges as possible and that it was important to combat the narrative of division and to define a sense of common Mediterranean identity.
The best way to build a common space is to celebrate every single success, to invest in youth and job creation, to empower women, to fight against climate change, to get involved on migration issues and to encourage mobility.
To this extent, PAM has always worked on projects that brought together the northern and southern shores, as well as co-operated with international institutions to promote trade and investment in the Mediterranean region. Furthermore, PAM is now promoting an initiative to launch a Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Community for Renewable Energy and will continue to mobilize parliamentary diplomacy towards peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region.
In conclusion, President Migliore suggested that beyond the commitment of civil society and parliamentarians, there is a need for political leadership and new goals for the region.
President Migliore thanked the European Commission for making the Mediterranean Festival happen and shared the hope for continued cooperation with European Institutions to secure stability and prosperity. “The Mediterranean region”, he added “is not Europe’s southern neighborhood, but rather our common historic cradle and crossroads of civilizations”//
