The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) wishes to express its concern following the clashes between the Muslim and Christian communities in Egypt on Sunday 9 October 2011.
The PAM Bureau and the Assembly also wish to convey their condolences to the victims and their families and augurs a quick recovery to the injured.
PAM would like to underline the importance of the values of respect and tolerance that must characterize those areas where citizens with diverse cultural backgrounds and religious believes live shoulder to shoulder. One must not forget that the Mediterranean is the cradle of civilization and the future for a peaceful, secure and stable region relies on the good will of every individual and community to live in harmony. Also the political, social and religious leaders and authorities of each and every country, are called upon to continuously strive to create the best possible environment where everyone can develop and bring forward his own aspirations in full respect of his fellow citizens.
PAM calls on all parties to understand the importance of the transformation taking place in the region, which changes will impinge on the future of more than 500 million people surrounding the Mediterranean basin.
