Statement by the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean
on awarding of 2015 Nobel Prize for Peace
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) sincerely congratulates the National Dialogue Quartet of Tunisia on the award of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. The Quartet is a true example of the role that civil society organisations can play in particular historical phases of a country, and in Tunisia they have given an important contribution in the political process towards democracy after the 2011 revolution.
PAM underscores the key role of the Quartet in mediating between the different parties in the country’s post-Arab Spring government. Amid a political and economic crisis in 2013, the Quartet had created, sustained and facilitated a process of national dialogue between the country’s main political parties.
As far back as March 2011, PAM has also met, during a number of high level missions to Tunisia, representatives of the civil society organisations, members of the Quartet. The support for the political transformation in Tunisia was widely discussed, particularly in the work leading to the election of the Constituent Assembly and eventually the adoption of the New Tunisian Constitution.
