Statement by the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean
on car-bomb attacks in Turkey

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) reiterates its condemnation of acts of terrorism and violence targeting innocent civilians, following the bomb attacks in the Turkish Southeastern city of Reyhanli in the Hatay province, bordering Syria. There is no justification for such acts.

The explosions causing, till now, the death of 46 people and injuring more than a hundred people, cannot be passively tolerated by the international community and PAM insists that any spill over of the Syrian conflict beyond its borders must be avoided at all costs both in respect for national sovereignty and stability in the region.

The fate of civilians in general and of the Syrian displaced population and refugees is constantly kept under the lens by PAM, which insists on a rapid and political solution to the conflict.

To this effect, in consultation with the UN Secretary General, PAM will convene a high level international parliamentary hearing to review with the Syrian parliamentarians, other PAM delegations, and major humanitarian organizations, obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian assistance and measures on how to step up protection to the civilian population in Syria and in neighboring countries.  The event will be hosted by the Italian parliament and will take place in Rome on 6 June 2013.

Finally, PAM expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.
