Statement by the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean
on the current situation in Tripoli, Libya
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is concerned at the escalation of clashes over the control of Tripoli International Airport and calls on all parties to agree on and respect an immediate ceasefire to avoid deaths and casualties, particularly among the civil population.
The Libyan people and their leaders have fought shoulder to shoulder for freedom and human rights. The intestine fighting that has characterised Libya in the last four years betrays both the aspirations for which blood was shed in the country, and the efforts of the international community to assist and facilitate the Libyan people in reaping the benefits of their sacrifices.
PAM reiterates its belief that the future of the Libyan population lies in the only possible option, a peaceful democratic process leading to a political solution to which all sectors of society must contribute through negotiations.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean will continue to promote dialogue and support the Libyan people and the newly elected parliament in their quest to build a new nation founded on the respect of the rule of law and solid institutions.
Furthermore PAM is at the full disposal of the Congress and the Minister of Foreign Affairs with whom PAM entertains regular contact on the situation in Libya.
