Statement by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the elections in Libya

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean expresses its congratulations to the Libyan people on the occasion of the country’s first elections in decades. Although with some difficulties in certain areas, men, women, young and old have cast their vote as a result of their determination to pave the way for a democratic process that will return governance of the country to the people.

Now its time for unity and national dialogue between all citizens, and this must be spearheaded by all the candidates and political entities that contested the election in a peaceful and democratic spirit.

Libya is a founding member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, and as such has received all the diplomatic attention and humanitarian support that the Libyan people needed throughout the historical events that led to the elections.

As agreed at a bilateral meeting two days ago between H.E. Mohamed Emhemed Abdul-Aziz, Deputy Foreign Minister of Libya, and Amb. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General, the Assembly will continue to coordinate with the Libyan authorities all those actions necessary to establish the Constitutional institutions, indispensable to provide clear and unequivocal democratic credentials at the national and international levels for the benefit of the Libyan people, as well as for the strengthening of peace, stability and security in the Mediterranean region.
