Statement by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the humanitarian situation in Syria

2 million refugees and tens of thousands of internally displaced people is the dramatic result of the unabated armed conflict in Syria, which is risking to explode into a far major theatre of instability in the Middle East, with serious repercussions on all the Mediterranean region.

The news by the United Nations, that in just twelve months the refugees in the neighbouring countries, not including those who have been risking their lives in the crossings towards mainland Europe, through Greece, Italy and Malta, have increased in such a disproportionate manner, is testimony to the fact that the situation, from a humanitarian point of view, is becoming intolerable and unacceptable by the hour.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean continues to spend all possible efforts and to explore, through its network with the region’s National Parliaments of the PAM member states, all possible negotiable alternatives for a political solution to the internal strife in Syria.

The use of chemical weapons, from whichever side, is to be condemned without any reserve or hesitation, and PAM supports the UN efforts to avert any escalation in the tensions and the rumblings of further sufferings by the civilians in the area.

PAM invites all parties and the international community at large to restrain and to moral goodwill, as to give priority to negotiations and for the citizens to have a chance to return to a decent, dignified and safe daily life.
