Statement by the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the
Occasion of the IPU 125th Anniversary

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, H.E. Sen. Francesco Amoruso would like to take the opportunity to convey PAM’s warmest congratulations to the IPU on the occasion of its 125th Anniversary.

Furthermore, PAM feels duty bound to express its gratitude to the attention dedicated to the Mediterranean region through the Parliamentarian’s Group for the Mediterranean and the CSCM experience, which eventually lead to the setting up of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, which has had as its first President in the biennium 2007-2008, H.E. Abdelwahad Radi, the incumbent IPU President.

PAM not only supports the vision of IPU as expressed in the message on the occasion of the 125th Anniversary, but shares the same sentiments regarding the role of parliamentarians as the chosen representatives of the citizens and therefore entrusted with their future and the consolidation and strengthening of democratic values and human rights.

The Mediterranean remains a unique region, the cradle of the very first concept of democracy, and all national parliamentarians carry the responsibility to adopt all the necessary legislative solutions to translate this value into tangible actions for the benefit of all the populations.

PAM and the member national parliaments’ delegations are committed to this objective, and will continue to work hand in hand with IPU to achieve the best possible conditions in the political, economic and social spheres, to guarantee peace, stability and security in the Mediterranean.
