Statement by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the release of PLC Speaker by Israel

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean welcomes the release by Israel of the Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Dr. Aziz Dweik after six months in administrative detention.

The Assembly encourages the Israeli Authorities to increase their efforts in the process for the release of the other 20 Palestinian deputies, of whom many have been in jail for more than 12 months.

The Parliamentary Assembly continues to be focused on the Middle East Peace Process through its Ad hoc Committee dedicated to all those issues concerning the development of the negotiation process and the situation on the ground.

PAM Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, in a recent meeting held with Israeli Ambassador to Malta, H.E. Oren David,   agreed to explore the possibility of organizing, in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority, a visit by a PAM high-level delegation to Ramallah and Jerusalem, as part of what Amb. David described the constructive and practical role of PAM in the Middle East Peace Process, both on its own initiative and in cooperation with the Secretary General of the United Nations.
