Statement by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the UN observers kidnapped by armed elements in Syria

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the 21 United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) peacekeepers held near the Golan Heights by armed fighters claiming to be Syrian rebels from the "Martyrs of Yarmouk" group.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean invites all parties to respect, support and guarantee the safety of the UN peacekeeping missions wherever they are deployed, since their presence represents a ray of hope for the settlement of issues through dialogue and compromise and not violence.
