Statement by the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean
on
violence in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank and Egypt

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is profoundly concerned that on the eve of a new year, an occasion for a festive atmosphere, the Middle East has experienced in the last days an escalation of violence which has left victims in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank and also in Egypt.

PAM calls on all parties to express good will and tolerance and act accordingly as to facilitate dialogue and concretely support the ongoing negotiations in the Middle East Peace Process and similarly in pushing forward the democratic transition challenges facing Egypt. In the latter case the Authorities in Cairo have to continue working to fulfill the spirit that motivated the Egyptians to call, with determination, for change and progress, for freedom and human rights.

Acts of violence, terrorism and retaliation are no key to peace and stability in these countries and more generally in the Mediterranean region and PAM remains fully engaged in supporting all initiatives towards the achievement of long term agreed solutions in these countries, which are important members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

PAM takes the opportunity to express its condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded.
