Statement by the President of the Inaugural Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean

We, participants in this Assembly, meeting in Amman, are profoundly concerned by the kidnapping and detention of the President of the Palestinian Legislative Council and many of his parliamentary colleagues, all of whom have been democratically and legitimately elected by the Palestinian people. We call upon the authorities of the State of Israel to release the MPs in detention, to respect their legitimate rights and parliamentary mandate, in conformity with international parliamentary law and practice. We also call upon the international community to extend its full and active support towards achieving the liberation of the parliamentarians and express the hope that they can soon join us in the work and activities of the newly-established Assembly.
