Statement by the President of The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the death of Nelson Mandela

Statement
by the President of
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean
on the death of Nelson Mandela

On behalf of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean I extend my deepest condolences to the people of South Africa and to the relatives of Nelson Mandela.

The demise of the father of an apartheid free South Africa, which he fought for unrelentlessly, has once more shown the greatness of his determination to defeat racism and discrimination. He personally paid for this battle with the imprisonment for 27 years, but at the end he and his fellow South African citizens prevailed.

Nelson Mandela will continue to live through his legacy, an undisputed model to all parliamentarians who believe in human rights, equality, peace and freedom.

While we express our grief and sorrow for the passing away of Nelson Mandela, let us seize the opportunity, as parliamentarians, to reflect on the challenges that we still have to surmount, and find in Nelson Mandela the inspiration to devote our roles to the service and the wellbeing of our populations.
