The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Hon. Pedro Roque and Hon. Maria Mercês Borges of Portugal represented PAM at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly held in Warsaw Poland on 26-28 May 2018. The conference reviewed the role that the Alliance plays in countering current security threats.
In his address, Hon. Roque contributed to the debate on the security situation in the broader Mediterranean region. While noting that NATO remains a key actor in regional security, President Roque stressed that stable demographics, education and employment opportunities, food security, and strong states, which are at peace with their neighbours and within themselves, are key to regional security, stability and prosperity. He briefed delegates on the work of PAM to address these issues, namely its work on counter-terrorism, regional trade and investment facilitation, climate change and mass migrations, as well as the direct cooperation being established by PAM with the Joint Force Command Naples in view of the important activities of the latter in the Mediterranean region.
