The Tunisian Ambassador to Malta, H.E. Souad Gueblaoui, paid a courtesy call on the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Dr. Sergio Piazzi, on 23 November, 2011.
Ms Gueblaoui and Dr. Piazzi discussed current issues of common interest in the Mediterranean region, and mainly on the developments taking place in Tunisia itself.
The meeting focused on the excellent cooperation established between PAM and the Tunisian authorities since the inception of the Assembly, and on the most appropriate way forward to further strengthen PAM – Tunisia relations, following the election of the Constituent Assembly and the designation of its President, Mr. Ben Jaafar.
The role and the involvement of Tunisia in the development of the PAM Panel on External Trade and Investments in the Mediterranean, were also discussed. In this context the visit of the European Bank for Riconstruction and Development (EBRD) Vice-President, Dr. Riccardo Puliti, to PAM Headquarters, in Malta, represents an excellent opportunity to fine tune the support of the PAM network in the region, to Tunisia’s maritime connections, electric grid and job creation efforts.
Other fields of cooperation, in which the Assembly has built a solid experience, have also been discussed, and these include education, vocational training and the development of Small and Medium enterprises.
Ms Gueblaoui and Dr. Piazzi have also agreed to propose to the Tunisian authorities, a high-level visit of a PAM delegation, led by PAM President, Sen. Fayez Al-Tarawneh (Jordan), to meet with the new President of Tunisia, Mr. Marzouki, the new Minister of Economy and Finances, the President of the Central Bank, as well as main industrialists and other economic actors.
